Colorado Podiatric Medical Association Meeting

This was our first year exhibiting at the Colorado Podiatric Medical Association’s annual meeting.  The meeting was held in Colorado Springs.  We we’re not sure what to expect.  We were pleasantly surprised with both the turnout and the program.  Since the meeting we have spoken with a number of Doctors who genuinely enjoyed the meeting and felt it was a large improvement over previous years.  Great job and thanks to all who worked to make this meeting a success for both the Doctors and Vendors.  Based on our experience this year we are planning on attending the 2010 meeting!

FAQ’s about surgical instrument maintenance

1. Why should I maintain my surgical instruments?

A. 99% of surgical instrument failures are due to misuse, abuse, and lack of proper care. Surgical instruments are major assets representing a large share of capital spending.  By properly maintaining your instruments you will extend the service life of your instruments by years which results in significant savings over the life of your practice or institution.

B. Surgical instruments perform best when they are properly maintained reducing risks to both patients and practitioners. A dull instrument does not cut as cleanly or efficiently as a properly sharpened instrument.  Properly sharpened instruments reduce hand fatigue.

2. How often should I have my cutting instruments sharpened?

As a general rule your cutting instruments including scissors, rongeurs, osteotomes, curettes, gouges, nail nippers and splitters and trocars, should be sharpened every six to eight months.  How fast an instruments cutting ability diminishes depends on factors including how often it is used, the type of material it is used to cut, and the type of material the instrument is manufactured from.  Once you notice a reduction in performance it is time to have your instruments sent in for routine maintenance.

3. What if I can’t afford to be without my instruments while they are being maintained?

We recommend you keep enough instruments on hand to allow you to send instruments in for maintenance without reducing your ability to continue to be productive while your surgical instruments in need of repair are receiving their tune-up!

4.  Is there a difference between people who offer mobile sharpening services and those who perform maintenance in their own facilities?  It depends, there are reputable mobile instrument repair services in the marketplace today.  However, these services are not available in every city.  Many mobile sharpening services do not employ qualified surgical instrument technicians.  We recommend having your repairs performed by qualified surgical instrument technicians who have been trained to spot problems with instruments often before others will see them.
